Mastopexy, or breast lift, is commonly performed to improve the appearance and shape of drooping or sagging breasts in women who have experienced loss of volume in their breast tissue due to pregnancy, weight loss, or aging. Dr. Burnett can remove excess skin, reposition the nipple, and recontour the breast, creating a more lifted, youthful, and shapely figure.
A breast lift may be performed alone or in conjunction with breast enlargement surgery (breast augmentation) based on your individual goals. Dr. Burnett can help each patient determine what choice is best for her.
REASONS FOR CONSIDERING BREAST LIFT SURGERY
There are certain criteria that make some people better suited for a breast lift than others. The following are good indicators of a patient who will benefit from having a breast lift procedure:
- Pendulous Breast
- Non-firm breasts
- Breasts that show a lack of substance
- Downward pointing nipples
- Downward pointing areolas
YOUR BREAST LIFT CONSULTATION
At your consultation, Dr. Burnett will conduct a thorough evaluation of your breasts with measurements and photos. The doctor will test the quality of skin around the breasts, the placement of your nipples and areolas, and the breast size and shape. Dr. Burnett will discuss the likely outcomes of the surgery and the potential risks and complications.
THE BREAST LIFT SURGERY
Surgery is performed on an out-patient basis, under general anesthesia. The procedure takes about 2-1/2 hours. Your breast lift procedure can be achieved through a variety of incision patterns and techniques. The appropriate technique for you will be determined in your consultation with Dr. Burnett. After the doctor makes the incisions the underlying breast tissue is lifted and reshaped to improve breast contour and firmness. The nipple and areola are repositioned to a natural, more youthful height. If necessary, enlarged areolas are reduced by excising skin at the perimeter. Excess breast skin is removed to compensate for a loss of elasticity.
After your breasts are reshaped and excess skin is removed, the remaining skin is tightened as the incisions are closed. Some incision lines resulting from breast lift are concealed in the natural breast contours; however, others are visible on the breast surface. Incision lines are permanent, but in most cases will fade and significantly improve over time.
If the patient is having an implant inserted along with the breast lift, the implant will be placed in a pocket directly under the breast tissue or under the muscle of the chest wall.
WHAT TO EXPECT FOLLOWING BREAST LIFT SURGERY
Dressings or bandages will be applied to the incisions after the procedure is completed. You will also be provided with a special post-operative support bra to minimize swelling and support your breasts as they heal. You will return to the office in 7 to 10 days to have your sutures removed. You can usually return to work after a week or two but normal activities should be limited for 4 weeks.
Because of the skin’s natural tendency to settle, the tissue will give slightly after a few months and some sagging will reoccur, but not to the extent of the original state. The results should last indefinitely, but may be affect by extreme weight gain or pregnancy. Gravity will still affect your breasts a bit over time, but only weight fluctuation will cause major changes in the breast appearance following the procedure.
