Through the fat transfer process, New Body MD surgeons can withdraw your own natural fat cells via liposuction, and use them to augment lips and cheekbones, fill in facial lines and wrinkles, or even boost the natural curves of your bottom and breasts. Based on the amount of excess fat you have available, Natural fat grafting can deliver a wide variety of desired results, from subtle figure enhancements to sizable breast or buttock augmentation. Natural fat augmentation has become popular in our Sacramento practice, as we offer liposuction techniques that preserve fat cells for fat transfer, and stem cell enrichment of the harvested fat to provide the benefit of stem cells to the injected areas on your body.
Benefits of Natural Fat Transfer
There are two primary benefits of natural fat transfer: your surgeon can help you eliminate problem fat deposits with liposuction that diet and exercise haven’t helped, while at the same time adding volume and definition elsewhere in your body, without the use of artificial implants or synthetic fillers. Fat transfer is really a win-win solution for body sculpting.
Fat transfer, also sometimes called fat grafting or fat injection, delivers very natural results. Since fat cells tend to be softer than synthetic fillers, Our surgeon’s are better able to smooth and contour the target area for superior results. These effects can last for several years, although in some cases multiple treatments may be necessary to achieve the ideal volume.
Also, since the patient is using tissue from his or her own body, any risk of allergic reaction that may be a concern with synthetic fillers is eliminated. Fat transfer remains one of the safest procedures for minimizing the appearance of scars and wrinkles, rejuvenating the appearance of the hands and face or changing your body contours to the image you desire. Fat transfer can also be used in liposuction revisions to correct any visible dimpling or unevenness left from a previous procedure.
The Best Candidates for Natural Fat Transfer
The purpose of fat grafting is to augment or fill in volume-deficient areas. Following this, the best candidates for natural fat transfer will desire fullness or rejuvenation in one or more of the following areas: face (including the lips), breast and buttock (for augmentation). The patient must of course have deposits or donor sites from which fat can be taken and should not have any circulation problems, either from a medical condition or smoking.
The Natural Fat Transfer Procedure
The liposuction portion of the fat transfer process will be performed with a form of Tumescent Liposuction. Newer techniques like laser liposuction or ultrasonic liposuction destroy the fat cells to facilitate their removal; although this is perfect for achieving body sculpting alone, fat transfer depends on the successful removal of living fat cells. When performed with fat transfer in mind, tumescent liposuction is the best choice for preserving both the life and integrity of the fat cells.
During the fat cell collection procedure, the tumescent fluid is slowly injected into the target area. This solution contains a local anesthetic to ensure patient comfort, epinephrine (to constrict the blood vessels and minimize bleeding) and a sterile saline solution. Some time is allowed for the solution to fully saturate the area down to the deepest fat layers, helping to release the cells for easier removal, minimizing damage throughout the withdrawal process.
After loosening the fat cells, the surgeon will use a back and forth motion to further separate the fat deposits while ensuring that movements are gentle enough to maintain cell integrity. Light suction is used to gently remove the combination of cells and tumescent solution; this mixture is processed to separate out the fluid and other impurities from the living cells as well as concentrate the mature stem cells.
Lastly, the processed and concentrated fat cells are injected into the area designated for augmentation. Your surgeon will inject extra fat initially to compensate for the partial reabsorption of fat cells that typically occurs after surgery.
After the Procedure
Patients will experience healing in multiple areas after their procedure, both at the cell collection site and at the injection site. The local anesthetic included in the tumescent solution helps patients stay comfortable into the early stages of their recovery. Swelling and bruising in both areas are very common. Most patients will notice more bruising at the cell collection site, and more swelling at the injection site. This dissipates in about a week, although the majority of patients are able to return to their typical daily routines sooner than that.
A compression garment is worn over any areas treated with liposuction, encouraging the body to conform to its new contours as well as reducing swelling and aiding in the expulsion of any remaining tumescent fluid.
Your New Look After Natural Fat Transfer
After your fat transfer, the cells will slowly continue to improve the appearance of the target area as they take root by developing their own blood supply. Not all the transferred cells will thrive in their new location, so repeat sessions are sometimes necessary to build up additional volume. Fat transfer delivers smooth, natural results that last as long (or, in many cases, much longer) than synthetic fillers.
You will enjoy the slimmer, smoother profile that is expected from traditional liposuction, as well as the fuller contours created through the fat augmentation process. The liposuction will leave behind very small scars a few millimeters in length that should heal to nearly invisible. Even better, the fat transfer procedure itself uses only a needle, delivering beautiful, scar-free results.
