Common questions about Breast Augmentation
Breast augmentation can give you the look you want and improve your self-confidence and self-esteem.* This is a major surgical procedure, and you may have questions and concerns. It’s important to understand the procedure and what you can expect to allow you to make an informed decision. The information on this page is designed to help you make an informed decision. Board Certified Plastic Surgeon, Jeffrey Sweat, MD, is a member of the prestigious American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Dr. Sweat frequently refers people to the ASPS website for more information on augmentation mammaplasty. You can find that information by clicking here.
This is a surgical procedure designed to increase breast size or restore the volume of breasts that has been lost through surgery or weight loss. At New Body MD Surgical Centers and Medical Spa’s in Sacramento and Stockton our plastic surgeons use Sientra Gel Implants and Natrelle Inspira Round Gel Implants.
You will schedule a consultation to meet with a board certified plastic surgeon who will discuss the surgery and your goals with you. Together, you will determine whether you need saline or silicone implants and what size you want to be.
The doctor will discuss the option of either a subglandular breast implant placement or a submuscular placement. Subglandular placement allows for faster recovery and is less painful. However, the implants are easier to see and feel through the skin than submuscular placement. While this option has a longer recovery process, the result is more natural looking and allows for easier imaging with a mammography.
You’ll also discuss your long-term goals for the procedure. Your surgeon will help you develop realistic expectations for what the procedure can and can’t do.
It can take between one and three hours, depending on the type of procedure and anesthesia used. Your plastic surgeon will give you an expected timeline for your augmentation procedure.
Many women can begin normal activities within a few days. They may be limited for more strenuous activities for a few weeks. Each woman’s recovery is unique and our surgical team will give you a more accurate timeline.*
You should be healthy and at least 18 years old. You should not be pregnant or nursing or have any other major health conditions. A doctor will go over your medical history to determine if you are a good candidate for the surgery.
Many times, additional surgeries may be necessary in the future to maintain the look of the breast or to replace the implants. Your doctor will be able to tell you what to expect as time goes by once you have the procedure.*
In the past, silicone gel implants were discovered to be dangerous to some women. However, new processes have been put into place to ensure all implants are safe for this procedure. You should always talk to your doctor about any concerns you have.*
In most cases, the surgery is performed on an outpatient basis. The patient can go home the same day, but they will be limited on activities and may require help with some routine tasks. If you’re considering breast augmentation but not sure if you are ready for the procedure, schedule a consultation to learn more about it.
